friend request

That option hasn't gone anywhere, it's still there.

How to add/send a friend request:
Open the userlist > select and open the profile of the user you want to send the request to > three lines (burger menu) middle icon top right corner > 'add friend' under the tab that says Global

it just says private and ignore
 
Are you trying to friend request a guest? Only registered members can send and receive friend requests.
 
Guest accounts do not have an option to be sent a friend request as that is exclusively available for registered members. There is also the possibility of you being blocked by the user you want to send the friend request to.
